WCAG 2.2 and EN 301 549
EN 301 549 is the European accessibility standard for digital services. Public sector bodies in Ireland must meet it for their websites and apps – including online training for staff and members – under the EU Web Accessibility Directive (S.I. 358/2020), and the European Accessibility Act is bringing the same requirements to many private-sector services.
- EN 301 549 V3.2.1, the version the law refers to today, uses WCAG 2.1 level AA for web content.
- EN 301 549 V4.1.1, published in September 2026, moves to WCAG 2.2.
Designing to WCAG 2.2 AA covers the web content requirements of both versions, so your platform is ready for the new standard.
What it means for your learners
- Keyboard only – every menu, course, quiz and form works without a mouse, with a clearly visible focus that is never hidden behind sticky headers or banners.
- Screen readers – headings, labels and landmarks that make sense when read aloud, and buttons that say what they do.
- Readable – strong colour contrast, text that can be enlarged and pages that reflow on a phone or at 400% zoom without scrolling sideways.
- Easy to use – controls large enough to tap, no drag-only interactions, help in the same place on every page, and no need to enter the same information twice.
- Simple sign-in – single sign-on or a password manager, with no puzzles to solve.
- Time to finish – extra time or extra attempts on quizzes for individual learners who need it.
Accessible courses, too
A platform is only as accessible as what runs on it. The courses we create are designed to the same level: keyboard-friendly navigation, text alternatives for images, captions and transcripts for every video, and colour that is never the only way information is given. When you bring existing courses, videos or documents, we can check them and tell you what needs fixing.
Keeping it accessible
- For your course authors – an accessibility checker in the text editor flags missing image descriptions, poor contrast and unclear headings before content is published.
- For your organisation – we help you prepare the accessibility statement that public bodies have to publish, and fix any issues your users report.
